keep it simple.

With this post I hope to clarify a bit more about the use of a NFC tag icw the Booomtag platform. Sure its something "new" and nobody knows if, or how much the use of such tags in products will evolve over the next years. But hey, most daily used technologies were looked at sceptical at first.

All Ventum Kites, Boards and Bars now in production contain an integrated NFC booomtag® programmed on the Booomtag platform.

WHAT ITS NOT ?:
• It is not a GPS tracker to find your stuff.
• It is not a chip that collects data from you to sell to third parties.
• It is not an electronic device that contains a battery.

WHAT IS IT THEN?
• An NFC tag can be read with any modern smartphone.
• Each tag has a unique identifier just like a serial number on the products.
• In this case the tag is programmed for the Booomtag platform.
• After scanning the TAG you will see ALL information regarding the product, name, version etc.
• You can register your product for free on the Booomtag platform under your own free account with all your other products that have the tag.
• You first get different privacy settings so that you decide what you do and do not want, you can also adjust this in the settings at any time.

WHAT DOES IT DO FOR YOU?
• If your Ventum product is stolen or lost, you can indicate this in your account. Anyone who purchases a product second-hand, or finds a product received a message that it concerns a missing product when they scan the tag. The platform takes care of the communication so that you can get your product back. Of course, you can still put your number directly on your board / kite / bar and that still makes more sense for many people, but the tag is not only intended for this.
• Boards are currently not insured for loss in The Netherlands, if there is an NFC tag in it, a board may be insured in the future with one of the insurers with which booomtag is currently in discussion. Hopefully this will get more and more spread also in other countries.
• Your product is provided with your data ... .. but these are NOT visible by others. In other words, others cannot get your name, number or address by reading your tag. There are situations and professions where that may be preffered.
• You can (if desired) show ICE (in case or emergency) numbers when someone reads the tag.
• If you give permission, you will receive push notifications regarding recalls or other information regarding the safety of your product.
• If you give permission for this, you will receive offers aimed at your product and situation. For example, your bar is 2 years old, check if your lines are still in good condition. You can purchase a new line set with an extra discount.
• If you give permission, you will receive information about upcoming upgrades or replacement offers.
• The platform is still in its early stages, there will be more applications in the future. Maybe think of session logging etc.

WHAT DOES IT DO FOR VENTUM?
• Ventum does not send newsletters, but in this way, if you give permission, it can send very specific information about your products and situation.
• Ventum has a much better overview of where the products are used (read / registered).
• Ventum can see who the new owner is of the gear when you resell it (they can create a free account and the current owner passes the gear to the other person).
• Ventum can pass on safety information in a very targeted manner if there is a problem.

You are correct, a lot can be done with both but there are a few benefits for NFC over QR in this use.

1 - A QR code needs to be clearly visible in high good and a minimal graphical quality. The NFC tag in the Ventum bars for example is under the EVA grip, on the grip there is a simple Booomtag logo (cut in EVA). That wont be possible with QR.

2 - NFC tags include a secure element toward duplication, they enable product authentication, that is not the case with QR, anybody can copy/print a QR code.

Downside of NFC is that Apple only adpoted it recently in their phones so older Iphones wont be able to read the tag but this "issue" will phase itself out quite fast.

Off course I can/want only talk for Ventum and my reasons to implement this technology.

The tag does nothing if its not used. Ventum is selling online, the tag is not collecting more data than people fill in when they purchased the gear.

If people want they can add extra information themselves like ICE data or important medical info.

On a kite that is maybe not always relevant but currently there are also trials to implement in wetsuits to, for example, allow medical teams to read tags to get medical info fast or be able to call family if people added this themselves! Again, you dont have to! There are people out there for who this maybe important.

Not all people like to have a phone number visible on their gear that anybody can see and use.

Believe it or not but forums are full of lost boards, forgotten bars and even kites after each stormy weekend and most don’t have a phone number on them.

The retail price of Ventum gear is among the lowest, conform its mission, and does not even increase this year, even though transport prices are currently almost double, material prices increased, and Asian salaries (read production costs) have increased….and the NFC is added.

Currently Ventum bars and boards don’t have a serial number. I have led a kite factory for 4-5 years and serial or batch numbers are particularly important to identify potential batch related manufacturing defects fast. Any unique serial on your gear costs money so costs are made regardless if its NFC or other.

Many people who ride Ventum feel engaged and ask for information on new releases and developments or maintenance questions. There is no newsletter subscription for Ventum atm. Via the NFC people basically can subscribe, if they want, to a personalized newsletter.

All this made me decide to implement this (new) technology.

I dont understand how calling people dumb who value something which you dont is contributing to any topic.

I think,

it may be a very good option for some people. And there is no harm, if anyone doesn't want to use the option, so why be negative about it?

@inter2k3

- Multiple brands and product types are looking into the technology atm. (kite, bar, board, ski, snowboard, bags, wetsuits, tools....anything that can get lost and has value) In principle you dont even need the Booomtag platform and a brand can programm it themselves with any info they want but the vision would be that a person has one account where they have all their valuable items. Now maybe that is not valuable for all people but if you are a building company or ski rental it could be very usefull.

- You are correct, recognision of the NFC logo is not widely known yet but if the technology gets adopted more, it will. The logo is printed or in case of the Ventumbar cut in EVA on the device over the location where the tag is.

- Fair point, the owner of the product (not the platform) decides the action when they report their item as "lost". At this moment there is SMS and mail but the upgrade is, as we speak, to also show he phone number and a "call" button. (again, the owner decides what others see when their item is lost)

- Yes, if that works for you, all fine. As written in my previous post, there are multiple reasons its implemented. Another example, there are quite some people with a serious health issue where it could be helpfull if a tag can be scanned by others showing SOS buttons that directly call a familly member...again, the choice is to the owner of the items.

- If someone finds your board they can remove the sticker and sell the board/kite/bar. To remove the NFC tag they have to damage the gear before resale. It's no guarantee for sure but maybe increases the chance you retrieve your gear. As mentioned before, lost boards are not insured in The Netherlands, Booomtag is currently in nagociation with a sport insurrance to change that for gear which has the NFC tags but also here.... all worked on and not yet there.

@Wallhalla

- I dont know so many people who know the serial numbers of their board, bar and kites.

- But even if you know your serial number, if I buy a 2nd hand bar, kite, drill machine or whatever, where can I (as buyer) check if that gear is stolen/lost? With the NFC I can simply scan and directly know if its a legimit item offered by the owner and if not, call the real owner with 1 button. Ok, this assumes that the buyer cares if the gear is legimit and not stolen off course. Its not a final solution, just trying to make things a bit better at very low costs.

- Many brands offer to register their products so if someone took the effort they will probably be able to trace their serial indeed and that is exacly the point in the case of Ventum. Ventum bars and boards did not have a serial yet nor a way to register gear hence this is a way to combine many things in one shot.

@all,

Correct, the "3 bows" are the general sign for NFC.
Items with NFC on the Booomtag platform however, have the logo shown here.
Its a variation, the circle is actually the place under which the tag is located.

I realize the bar picture is not the best example, on the kite/boards and other larger items the logo has text as well but that is not readable on the bar grip hence we left out text there and anticipate on growing recognission.
