Standard KTA 3. Tourstop Vietnam, offizieller Schlussbericht

Wow, what an awesome tour stop. Big thanks to all involved from the riders to the local organisers, the sponsors and everyone who helped out each day to make the Vietnam round the best yet. The Mui Ne conditions lived up to everything we had hoped for, as one of Asia’s most consistent wind venues, by giving the KTA tour four days of excellent competition, along with cool parties by night courtesy of our key local sponsor Sankara.

The round kicked off with both the men’s and women’s course racing on day one, with day two and three focusing on the freestyle events, plus an additional Big Air comp by popular local demand, which left the final day open for further course racing to finishing things up.

After some very tough technical racing on day one, on a short two-lap course, our current tour course race leader Yo from Thailand kept control of the number one spot in the men’s sections with Kathryn Bogwardt leading for the women. The 50% finish time rule was to prove a killer for a lot of riders in both the men’s and women’s races as some very fast winning times were put up by the winners. Still at the end of day one it was all still to play for, with more racing anticipated as the comp progressed.

Day two started with the stronger winds being forecast by Windfinder being there just as predicted, so the freestyle competition now took centre stage. Given the great conditions, the KTA head judge was able to directly run the double eliminator for both the 12 women competitors and the 26 men from the word go.

There were many great rounds on the way through to the finals, over the two days with riding standards noticeably on the up from the first two rounds in China and Hong Kong. The great conditions for sure played a part of this, but also the improving level of riders taking part from 19 different countries was by far the biggest factor. In the end many heats were so close that only a split decision from the three judges would separate which riders would be carrying on and which would have to fight back through the looser brackets to get another chance at the top slots.

Amongst all the great skills being displayed over the two days it is worth noting for the guys the performances turned in by the local riders from Vietnam making the home water advantage work in their favour, with Kin, Nhut and Nam definitely being riders to watch as the tour continues. Also from further away, Vincent Loof, Freddrick Soupart and Victor Kampan looked dangerously close to unsettling the current tour leaders as the competition progressed, but in the end the final came down once more to the head to head that has been running from the first round between the Philippines Ken Nacor and Thailand’s Yo.

This time though it was to be Yo turning the tables on Ken and taking the top spot for the Vietnam men’s freestyle title. Phi Lai Hong claimed the third slot third as he was to do again in the course racing, underlining him as one of the riders showing most improvement since the tour began last year.

For the women it was upsets all round as Vietnam favourite Julia Diep Anh Thu gave some very strong performances with great power and style to challenge for the top spot, though in the end was fought out between Kathryn and KTA newcomer Nuria Goma, in a tough final with the final judges decision going Kathryn’s way.

The Big Air competition that then followed on to finish day three of the Vietnam tour stop gave the supporting crowd even more to cheer about as the 60 riders that had entered set about their two timed jumps. As with all big air comps we were then treated to a great jump show, with rider after rider boosted hard off the Mui Ne shore break to hit some good air times. There were also the crowd pleasing moments as riders wiped out landings, lost the odd board or of course for two heroic riders jumped with the aid of duck shaped swimming rings! The end results however saw Sergey Roszhkov take the men’s title with a jump of 6.2 seconds and Maki Yamamura putting up 3.8 seconds to win the women’s section.

Although the final day began with a morning of low wind, the thermals came through once more in the afternoon to allow for further course racing heats to take place, this time with a larger course being set for the riders race over, a bit less technically demanding than day one, but now requiring good speed and line selection.

The racing was again extremely tight between the top girls, so much so that both Nuira and Kathryn ended up with identical results for the rounds racing. Unfortunately at this point the thermal wind began to shut down and it became clear that a decider could not be run, leaving the KTA head judges to refer back to the IKA for clarification on breaking the tie. The decision took the winners place to Nuria on the basis of her winning the last of the women’s races held during the event, a very tough rule and one which all riders on the KTA agreed needs some revision. For the men’s side of things Yo remained dominant putting in some very fast finishing time’s in each heat, that left all the battles to take place for the remain podium positions behind him.

So thumbs up for the KTA Vietnam with great competition throughout and great support for the event from main sponsors the Evason Hua Hin Six Senses Spa. Local sponsors, Sankara, and head local organisers C2Sky, with support sponsorship from Mystic, Ripcurl, Ozone and Windchimes, backing up the tour level sponsors, Cabrinha, Maelstorm, Kite Zone and SueMe.
