Amazing Surf conditions at Playa Encuentro in Cabarete / Dominican Republic

After a great and very consistent surf in July (3 – 6 ft every day, glassy in the morning) the highlight followed August 21th 2009. Hurrican Bill was far out in the Caribbean, passed the island and brought amazing waves to the north shore in Cabarete. The waves started picking up in the afternoon the day before but because of the wind the ocean was still a bit choppy and had lots of currents it was hard to catch the right wave. The next morning everyone set the alarm clock at 6am with great expectations. At sunrise we walked down to the beach and saw these massive sets coming in. The ocean was super clean, the waves glassy and breaking perfectly. A few guys were already in the water and as we saw a local taking the first barrel we paddled out right away. The waves were about 10ft with some bigger sets with the size of 12ft but not closing out. Within the next hours it got even cleaner and because of the lower tide the waves got even more hallow and barrelling. At 9am there were about 100 people and lots of photographers standing on the beach and screaming after every wave which was taken. They saw some massive wipeouts, some barrels and lots of smiling faces from the guys coming out of the water. For a moment you thought you are standing on the north shore of Hawaii or in front of Uluwatu. Indeed there was something magical going on here this morning. Luckily the wind didn’t pick up so the surf was on the whole day.
